CASP STUDENT ORGANIZATION: Work + Volunteer + Mentor

The newly formed CASP Student Organization (CSO) held its first recruiting event at the OU Student Union on January 18. CSO members volunteered their time to hand out informational flyers and answer questions of potential volunteers, staff and mentors interested in working with our more than 600 students in our 17 school age programs.

If you are interested in joining the CASP Student Organization or working with our after school programs as an adult mentor, please contact us at 405-366-5970 ext. 217.

Thanks to the generosity of some of our amazing parents, staff and friends, CASP was able to purchase enough yoga mats for every child to participate in our weekly yoga program at our nine Be Fit Club program sites. The students are already enjoying using the yoga mats at a few sites. Soon, approximately 350 CASP kids will be “striking a pose” as they stretch and breath their way to the many fitness benefits of yoga.

UPDATE: New snack options are a HUGE hit! The number of kiddos eating snack at each of our programs was up by 35.25% in December! Thank you to Mark and Holli and all of the Sodexo staff for making this change such a huge success!

CASP recently met with Sodexo Child Nutrition to review the snack menus for our after school programs. Administrators from both organizations came together to discuss ways we could improve our healthy snack options while staying within budgetary guidelines and maintaining compliance with the Federal Feeding Program. After a great meeting with Sodexo’s Mark Coulter, General Manager, and Holli Warren, Food Service Manager, we came up with a plan to improve food options and to reduce waste by moving to water as our only beverage. So far, the students are loving the new menu options and more students are eating snack each day.

We would like to thank Sodexo Child Nutrition for meeting with us and working to make this very important issue a priority and for offering creative solutions to address our unique challenges. Students, parents, and staff have all noticed a positive difference and that is the best outcome we could hope for!

NOTE: If your child attends one of our programs, you can view the monthly snack roster on the CASP bulletin board.

CASP AmeriCorps Members, Staff & Children Honor Veterans

Community After School Program AmeriCorps members , staff, and children collaborated to thank and recognize Norman area veterans for their service on Veterans Day 2016.  Site Directors and site staff used this as an opportunity to educate the children on military service, wartime history, and American democracy.  Staff guided children as they completed thank you cards that included personal messages, poems, and drawings.

On Thursday, November 10, a total of 86 cards were delivered to the Norman Veterans Center.  CASP AmeriCorps members Julie Dunham, Madeleine Stucky, and Hunter Zearley spent time with veteran residents of the Norman facility during their lunchtime in the dining hall.  CASP AmeriCorps member Manny Herrera delivered an additional 98 cards to inpatient residents and outpatients at Oklahoma City’s Veteran Affairs Medical Center and 75 cards to the south Oklahoma City/Moore Veterans Clinic to be shared with their outpatients.

The OU Multicultural Greek Council recently conducted a book and school supplies drive to benefit the Community After School Program. In total, their organization donated 31 books and a variety of much-needed school supplies including glue, pencils, markers, and paper. Several members of the group visited the CASP administrative office to drop off their donation on December 2, 2016. We are so thrilled and thankful to be the recipients of such a generous donation from this awesome organization. Thanks OU MGC!
